Hello, my name is Lydia.

I have lived in the Wicker Park/Bucktown/Humbolt area all my life. I would like to share a true testimonial story of my encounter with what turned out to be my life line.

I was a single mom struggling to raise a son 6 and daughter 1. I felt like I was at a point where all would be lost, my son to drugs, gangs, violence, my home and daughter.

One day feeling at the lowest point I’ve ever felt I walked past a place that seemed to have just opened in my neighborhood and for reasons unknown to me (but now I can honestly say it was divine intervention), I turned around; there were 2 men inside teaching this little boy Martial Arts, this place was Chang’s Tae-Kwon-Do, the man inside was Lanre Lawanson.

We talked for some time and I felt for the first time a little hope, not for me but for my son.

Lanre knew I had very little means, but he was sympathetic to my struggles and accepted my son in his class. During the years my son thrived, then the teen years came, a Mom’s worst fears; the time when a child goes from good to bad or good to great. My son stopped his training, stopped going to school, he was becoming lost and I could see it, the change in his demeanor was the most fear I have ever felt!

The one person I knew my son would respect, was, and still does to this day, is Lanre. I worked with Lanre to pull back my son, that’s when Lanre showed my son another type of training, and my son was back with Chang’s Tae-Kwon-Do and Lanre.

My son, now 29, still trains and is doing great! My hopes and dreams that he would grow up and be the man I can be proud of is more reality then I have ever imagined. I am truly grateful for having Chang’s Tae Kwon-Do and Lanre Lawanson in my neighborhood.

Chang’s provided the structure, discipline and outlet my son needed and I will forever be indebted to Lanre and Chang’s TKD.

Sincerely,
Lydia S
