Rafael Flores in Chicago - Chang's Martial Arts Academy

Rafael Flores

Rafael Flores was born in 1963 in the island of Puerto Rico. He grew up there playing baseball and soccer. After graduating from high school at the age of 18, he joined the military where he started taking Tae Kwon Do. He served his 3 years tour, received his discharge and moved to Chicago. He met his wife Lillian, a year later they married and have two daughters. In 1998 driving down Milwaukee ave., he saw a martial arts school and stop to ask for more information. A week later the entire family joined ChangÆs Martial Arts. Due to an injury, Lillian left martial arts and joined the cardio kickboxing class. Rafael and his two daughters continued with Tae Kwon Do and they all reached black belt.

During the color belt process Rafael went to many tournaments and found out that sparring was what he liked best about Tae Kwon Do. In 2000 after reaching his first degree black belt, he went to his first state tournament and took first place. That same year he went to the nationals and took the silver medal. He then went to two consecutive state tournaments and took first place in both of them. In 2001 he went to his second national tournament and brought the gold medal home.

Though he does not compete anymore, Rafael continues to spar in class and enjoy helping others do better in that aspect of Tae Kwon Do. He holds a fourth degree black belt.
